And now science is weighing in on the side of coffee drinkers, telling us what we knew all along: that coffee is actually good for you. Drinking three to five cups a day can help to prevent cognitive decline. Studies have shown that it can even reduce the risk of diseases like Alzheimer?s and memory loss by as much as 65%.
And of course, it tastes great. So how much coffee do Americans drink anyway? To begin with, the U.S. is the world?s largest importer of coffee beans, soaking up a quarter of the total supply. In 2014, U.S. imports of coffee totaled 27.5 million bags. One person out of three is a coffee drinker, and the average intake is 1.64 cups a day for the entire population.
